Blue Oyster Liquid Culture – Oyster Mushrooms are well known as being one of the easiest mushrooms to grow at home, as well as being delicious to eat! Using liquid culture is generally the best way to grow mushrooms, as it is both quicker and safer (less chance of contamination if used correctly) than other methods. Our mushroom liquid cultures are prepared using strong and healthy mushroom cultures and grown in nutrient-rich malt and yeast extracts.
When growing mushrooms at home, the use of liquid culture (mycelium) for inoculating and colonizing grain is generally more efficient than spore syringes or agar wedge techniques. Liquid culture mycelium can be more evenly distributed in the grain bag/jar, resulting in more rapid colonisation.
Our Blue Oyster liquid culture is supplied in Luer-lock syringes (different sizes available)
Liquid culture should be stored in a fridge (never frozen) until ready for use. Provided it is properly looked after and sterile working practices are followed, it should remain usable for several months. Your Blue Oyster liquid culture can be used in various ways:
- To inoculate grain in order to start mycelium colonisation
- To inoculate fresh liquid culture supplies (so you can reproduce the culture)
- To inoculate agar dishes
Regardless of how you plan to use this liquid culture, be sure to read up on correct sterile working techniques, check that you are using the right type of grain for the mushroom type you wish to grow, check that you know what conditions are required for incubation and be sure that you then mix your fully colonised grain spawn with the right type of substrate. All these factors will have an effect on the quality of the final mushrooms you grow.
Above all, remember that patience and careful working practices are essential when growing mushrooms at home!
